Recently several people have asked if there translators to go from troff (ditroff) to PostScript. I know of several; I am sure that there are more. Transcript from Adobe Systems I am the most familiar with this system. I have used V2.0 and it is OK. There are numerous bugs but it isn't too hard to get around them. The one that bothered me the most was that I couldn't specify underlined fonts because font U wasn't defined. A source license is available for $1795.00. This is an excellent package that contains DWB 2.0, previewers, and drivers for HP Laserjet and PostScript printers. It is supported and available as binaries for many systems. It also has excellent X windows support. I have never used this product myself, but have had glowing reports from people who have. HOST: elan COMPANY: Elan Computer Group, Inc. The devps package is a collection of programs that support device independent troff in the PostScript environment. It includes capabilities to include PostScript files from other systems, including MacDraw and MacPaint. It is also easy to add other fonts (19 are supplied) such as the Hershey fonts. Source is available for $495.00. They also have a program that converts from old-troff (otroff) to ditroff and a Tek-4014 to PostScript translator. I have it somewhere on a tape but our tape drive is dead (temporary I hope) so I can't check it. I haven't tried to use it so I don't know any thing about it. -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- Daryl V. We did compile it (System V) and use it with DWB 2.0 from AT&T. It works excellent and at this moment we don't need more: there is also a PostScript program to obtain a shell script (!) with font information back from the LaserWriter. In fact, we did not have *any* problems with tpscript - only with the DWB software itself :-) -- -- ###### Jos Vos ###### Internet jos@idca.tds.philips.nl ###### -- ###### ###### UUCP ...!mcvax!philapd!jos ######

Our product runs on Sun4's running SunOS 4.0 (which is something the Sun folks tell me Transcript won't do) and provides integral support of the Berkeley printer spooler. In <556@ssp15.idca.tds.philips.nl> Jos Vos wrote about TPSCRIPT. I notice that it expects ditroff output. Is ditroff output different from troff output and if so, is there a converter available to do that? I'm running on a Sun which has no ditroff (to my knowledge) and worse yet, has no tmac.mm macro set (so all those memos I got with my hp widget set which used the mm macros are kind of tough to format) Mark -- [uunet!apctrc, romed, tulsun]!drd!mark DRD Corporation Pithy Quote mlawrence@jarsun1.ZONE1.COM (918)743-3013 Jer. 9:23,24

Yes, recent versions of troff produce universal-format text output intended to be post-processed by device-specific interpreters, instead of C/A/T binary codes like the old original troff. Unfortunately device-independent troff is not a standard part of the Berkeley distribution, and since it's a separately-licensed add-on AT&T product, many vendors don't package it with their systems. You should contact your vendor or some Documentor's WorkBench supplier such as Elan or SoftQuad. (DWB also contains the Memorandum Macros, tbl, eqn, pic, and more recently grap.)

You can get around this with a package called cat2dit, which comes with devps from Pipeline Associates. I don't have their company address handy, but you can reach the principals as follows: Pat Wood 201-731-7860 Steve Kochan (212) 598-4650 or (212) 598-9457 We resell devps, but have never gotten around to carrying the cat2dit upgrade. -- Tim O'Reilly (617) 527-4210 or (800) 338-NUTS O'Reilly & Associates, Inc., Publishers of Nutshell Handbooks 981 Chestnut Street, Newton, MA 02164 UUCP: uunet!ora!tim ARPA: tim@ora.uu.net

It's still being shaken out, but it works pretty good with straight text or eqn (our tbl appears to be broken) on an Apple LaserWriter.
