Is there any software available to compress files in UNIX, transfer it to an IBM compatible PC, and uncompress it on the PC?

Mortice Kern Software, a Canadian company just across the border, has a software package for DOS called the MKS Toolkit. In the version I have, it includes a Unix-compatible pack and unpack. I believe the latest version includes a compatible compress, which should be about as good as you can get both for degree of compression (Lempel-Ziv) and Unix compatibility. It is $139US. They advertise in places like Computer Language and PC Tech Journal. My manual is loaned out, so I can't provide the number right now. -bc -- Bill Crews bc@halley.UUCP (512) 244-8350 ..!rutgers!cs.utexas.edu!halley!bc

You'll find source code on conexch for pcomm (a UNIX communications program like the PC-DOS Procomm) and compress. These will let you compress and transmit your files to a PC. You'll also find compress.exe available. Just phone (714) 842-5851 and login as guest. The first two programs reside in /usr3/public, and the last in /bbs/guest/guest/tmp directories. -- USPS: The Consultants' Exchange, PO Box 12100, Santa Ana, CA 92712 TELE: (714) 842-6348: BBS (N81); (714) 842-5851: Xenix guest account (E71) UUCP: conexch Any ACU 2400 17148425851 ogin:-""-ogin:-""-ogin: nuucp UUCP: ...!uunet!turnkey!conexch!root || ...!trwrb!ucla-an!conexch!root

I cannot recommend it more highly for this and other similar applications. vi, grep, sed, awk, cpio, ... make DOS applications more of an extension to the UNIX utilities than the other way around. I have no involvement with MK other than as an extremely satisfied user.

You'll find both tar and compress that will run under PC-DOS on conexch. Call in on the XBBS number (714) 842-6348, and look in the unix file area. All programs are free for the downloading. You can get a list of the Unix/Xenix programs available by uucping /usr3/public/FILES & /usr/spool/uucppublic/FILES. uucp access is via the unpassworded uucp login: nuucp. Check the signature for a Systems line. It's much more convenient for transferring multiple files between dos and unix/xenix than the doscp programs usually supplied. Doscp (at least Xenix doscp) doesn't support wildcards. So you've got to explicitly bring each file over. It's really nice to use MKS cpio to package up all the files on the dos machine and then cpio them into your Unix box, or vice versa. I could talk with you 'til the cows came home about MKS's Toolkit.
(Or is that, "I could talk with the cows 'til you came home..."?)
MKS provides compress, cpio, Unix-like nm, an up-to-date awk (I even
ran DOS-under-Unix on my '386 machine for a couple of days to get to
use the new awk under Unix, as an experiment), vi, the Korn shell, and
lots more.
I don't work for MKS, and don't plan to because I really don't like hacking
MS-DOS, but consider myself a satisfied customer. From what I hear, I'm not
the only one.

If you need things that you recognize from Unix environments, like the
text formatters, shells, text-mangling utilities, and so on, it might
be a good idea to ask MKS what they have. The only company I've seen
stick to a "let's make it intuitive" model as well as MKS is Elan, who
makes a troff product.
And strangely enough, I think they're competitors in that arena....
