This is a silly little question which arguably might have been posted to comp.misc, however its Unix related: Does anyone have information concerning where (if at all) Unix is applied in AT&T's non-Unix business divisions? For example, do long distance operators use Unix workstations, or are network call routing systems Unix-based, or is AT&T's billing done on Unix machines? Just an idle curiosity ... -- Dave Hammond ...!uunet!masa.com!{marob,dsix2}!daveh

They use a lot of UNIX Systems at the Fiber plant in georgia. At least they seemed to durring the tour. ;-) Rob.

There are different architectures that link from MSDOS(YUK) AT&T 6300 PC's, AT&T 6386's to 3B2's (400, 600, 700 and 4000's) to 3B20's and Amdalhs (UNIX Based all the above) all the way up to IBM 3090's. BTW, all Vaxes are got with exeption of a few still in Technologies plants, (the ones being shoot down). 2. My group's developed a data entry system for 3B2's, and have the 6386 (UNIX too) version under development, that transmits via RJE and UUCP to IBM and AT&T 3B20's financial systems. 3. Another use is down loading from mainframes to 3B2's for MIS's. I developed and support one of this (3B2/600) for our service material requirements inventory system (which is run in two Amdahls). 4. Others have Teradata UNIX interface running with Amdahls, and AT&T 3B's. 5. There are major applications using AT&T Escort transaction manager hitting large mainframe databases. These are some examples in the financial arena. Others in the Labs are in the Year 2000 playing with future products that will break all imaginable barriers. _____ -- Romeo J. Many sites not using the Vaxes for Unix research are indeed getting rid of Vaxen (which are happily accepted by the Unix research area's). Basically, only 750's are really being tossed. Anything better is still very useful as Bell Labs does the Unix research using the ninth edition Unix, which exists mostly on Vaxen. Not only am I sending this message from a Vax, it is a Vax that was surplussed by another area. Runs great! I would certainly not give it up for a Sun.
