unix-wizards-request@BRL.MIL (UNIX Wizards) (04/02/89)
Good evening, I have not been paying very close attention to the info-UNIX list recently so I do not recall specific instances which this gentleman is referring to. He does have a valid point however: there are two lists (info-UNIX/comp.unix.questions and UNIX-wizards/comp.unix.wizards) with differing purposes. The info-UNIX list *is* for less experienced users, and was created to ease the clutter in the UNIX-wizards list for those who have a low tolerance of "less than wizardly questions". Consider this a plea for tolerance: that the list membership will show restraint -- no reply is better than simply flaming -- remember we all had to learn sometime; and that Eddie will not be too upset by a few overly enthusiastic responses. Eddie: I hope you will consider staying with the list. There is a large pool of expertise available, and a large number of people who are willing to share that knowledge without excessive flaming. On the flip side, I encourage you to make a reasonable effort to answer questions locally first. Attempt to use the manuals; the permuted index, or the apropos command (depending on what you have available) can be a wonderful aid. Above all, chase down the likely sounding leads. Many times following the "See Also" leads in the man pages has eventually answered a question (I also learned alot along the way). Meanwhile, continue to monitor the list, use it to get answers to questions you have been unable to resolve locally, and to seek clarification for those answers you are not sure you understand. With that in mind, I am leaving you on the list. If you still wish to be removed, send another note and I will delete you. --for Mike Muuss, Later, Bob <reschly@BRL> ----- Forwarded message # 1: Received: from adm.brl.mil by SEM.BRL.MIL id aa02364; 28 Mar 89 20:12 EST Received: from Wally.CC.MsState.Edu by ADM.BRL.MIL id aa04292; 28 Mar 89 20:02 EST Received: by Wally.CC.MsState.Edu (4.1/2.5s); id AA00976; Tue, 28 Mar 89 07:28:54 CST Date: Tue, 28 Mar 89 07:28:54 CST From: Eddie Mikell <eddie@wally.cc.msstate.edu> Message-Id: <8903281328.AA00976@Wally.CC.MsState.Edu> To: INFO-UNIX-request@BRL.MIL Subject: unsubscribe eddie mikell from info-unix unsubscribe eddie mikell from info-unix Sirs: According to your description of this particular group, it is meant for beginning users to ask specific unix questions. However; after just one week on the net, I noticed several letters critisizing some of the simple questions that we were asked by some of the users! I believe you should re-evaluate the purpose(and the description) of your group. The questions that were presented were not elementary questions, and the group as a whole seemed to thumb their nose at anyone not being a super unix god. Good bye. ----- End of forwarded messages
