[comp.unix.questions] UN*X for a VAXcluster?

sr16+@andrew.cmu.edu (Seth Benjamin Rothenberg) (04/05/89)

I recently spoke with someone who needs a large computer (a few hundred
users, I think). He wants to run UNIX, but hasn't seen a single computer
that's able to handle this number of users. The type of hardware
he is thinking of is a VAXcluster - several VAXen sharing all peripherals-
but he said DEC doesn't have Ultrix support for it. Does anyone know
if there is a version for UNIX that does support this hardware?
(The system he has now shares files over an ethernet, but is not the
system of choice).

Thanks in advance.

Seth

ULTRIX most definitly does support the HSC and CI hardware. This
with the supported NFS included will probably give you what you want.

I would guess that he hasn't looked hard enough. At our site we have 3 Gould
PowerNode 9080's. They are used for general office automation-type work.
Machine configuartions are as follows:
Users	Disk Storage Capacity
-----	---------------------
257	2736 MB
631	4436 MB
748	4436 MB

These systems are working fine with these configurations.

How many of those users are logged on simultaneously? I think that's what
he's looking for. There have been PDP 11/70's with 1700 users in the
password file, but certainly not all logged in at once.

system average users logged in at any one time
257 users	20
631 users	30-40
748 users	40-50

P.S. I'm not so sure that he is looking for a system that can handle several
hundred users at once. If he is, then I think that he will have a hard time
finding anything.

It is my understanding that ARIX is one of the only manufacturers with
UNIX models that will handle hundreds of simultaneous users.

An Amdahl 5990-1400 with four engines, each ~60 VUPS (yes, its rubber
ruler time again - insert usual disclaimers) running SysV native is
handling this load for a number of our customers. Some of them are
banging on us to expand the 1024 device limit so they can add more
users/more disk (1.8 terabytes isn't enough).

I apologize for the blatant commercialism, but I couldn't stand seeing
all these little UNIX engines being called big anymore...
