I always thought that ginger beer was the British name for
ginger ale; is there a difference? The best ginger ale in the
world is Canada Dry.

You have obviously been living in isolation. Try some Old
Jamaican Ginger Beer sometime - it will clear your sinuses, cure
the common cold and curl your toes. Great stuff. Makes Canada Dry
taste like club soda by comparison.

Oh boy is ginger beer _not_ just ginger ale by a different
name. Ginger ale is drinkable, in a pinch; I'd rate it tied with, say,
cola, and well before Dr. Pepper, but well behind bitter lemon, or even
straight tonic water. Ginger beer, on the other hand rates right up
there with champagne on my list of things to drink. Ginger beer is to ginger
ale as stout is to light beer. Unfortunately you can expect to pay as
much for it as for real beer, and may get carded (although it is not
alcoholic). Good stuff, but not for those who don't like strong tastes.

You bet! Ginger beer is great. I think Schwepps (sp?) makes a ginger beer.

Ever try Vernors?

Ginger beer has a stronger flavor and forms a head, like root beer.

Canada Dry is bland as ginger ales go. I prefer Schweppes or Dr. Brown's.

I heartily agree! Old Jamaican is the tops. Almost
as good as my grandfather used to make when I was a little
one - and then only allowed a few sips! :-).

You have to be either terribly underpriviledged or off your ever-loving
gourd!!! Canada Dry Fizzy Water -- good ginger ale??? Bleccch!!

The best ginger ale I have found is Vernor's Ginger Ale. It is made
with real ginger and has a really zingy taste. When I was a wee lad
and had a cold or the like, my mom would heat a cup of it to help clear
up the head and throat -- it was almost worth catching the cold to have
that treat!!!

Ginger beer is a necessary ingredient in my favorite summer drink. (Bars
around here make it with 7-Up - YUCK!). Ginger ale just won't do, as it
is the ginger beer that gives it its kick. Save this recipe for next
August, and drink it while lounging on your porch swing.

		MOSCOW MULE
(from a Smirnoff brochure, I believe)

		1 shot vodka
		juice of 1/2 lime
		Ginger Beer

		Pour vodka over ice in a tall glass;
add lime juice and fill with ginger
		beer. Stir, sip, and enjoy.
