Hi there, i am member of a small group of system managers/administrators at the Fac. of Electrical Engeneering of the Delft University of Technology in Holland. We try to keep over 60 (super) mini's and workstations up and running (and survive :-)). The hardware : HP (800's and 300's), SUN (3/60) and Apollo (DN3000). All run their respective flavors of Unix, all have connection to Ethernet (mix of thin and thick wire, DELNI, DEMPR ...). Now for our problem. We recently started efforts to build a flexible management and distribution system that will allow us easy modification of our user database. Don't tell me to go for YP services, for it won't do the tricks we want, like : having *all* users known to *all* hosts *but* permitting user X to log in only on hosts A, B and C, and some other user Y only to log in on hosts Q; allowing a single user t have different passwords on different hosts. We like to go even one step beyond that. We want to be able to distribute other, fairly common, things to all those systems. E.g : '/etc/hosts', '/etc/services' and possibly more. At the moment we are still in the planning phase but will start implementing the ideas we have pretty soon. If the situation described above sound anywhere familiar, please tell us about it. We would welcome any info, help or maybe even sources (in C) that you would care to share. Please email responses to me, though i can't prevent anyone from putting it worldwide. Good stuff will be summarised to the net. +--------------------------------------------------------------+ + Erik Platzbecker + + Faculty of Electrical Engeneering + + Delft University of Technology, Holland + + + + Email address : {...mcvax!hp4nl!}dutentb!erik + + + +--------------------------------------------------------------+
