[net.cooks] apple-pears

phil@amdcad.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (11/23/85)

My supermarket just started carrying a new fruit they call apple-pears.
They are round like apples but the flesh is more like a pear. The taste
is sweeter, I think. It's very crunchy and juicy and I like it quite
a bit. I have a couple of questions.

1) How do you know when they are ripe?
2) Where do they come from? Are they natural or engineered?

Responses can be followups or mail. If I get a lot of requests for a
summary, I'll include your reply unless you ask me not to.

They are probably Mediterranean Pears, (I think, anyway) and are definitely
natural. They should be eaten when firm, like an apple, rather than a pear.
Their color is a reddish green (splotchy red on green) when ripe.
