[net.music] Intelligible lyrics in songs

michaelk (04/29/83)

Without the words, where would "rocky raccoon", or any other Beatle and/or
Paul McCartney music be? In my opinion, "songs" should have a melody, and
that melody should be carried by the vocalist. Slur of words is a big
negative factor using my personal criterion. Punk rock is
"music" (some of which I like) but usually are not "songs". Classical music
generally aren't "songs" either. My favorite class of music is "show tunes",
usually broadway-play type music rather than movie music. In this class of
music, the music are definitely "songs", and are part of the play's
story. (I "grew up" in the late Beatle age.)

Well, with most rock singing being a modified scream, it's hard to
get intelligible lyrics and maintain that overly-emotive quality.
