[comp.unix.questions] Setting up System on AT machine

cassidy@cdp.UUCP (06/04/89)

Could someone please tell me if it's possible to setup AT&tT's System V on a
8MHz AT? I presently have an 8 MHz AT, Telebit T2000 modem, Hercules Display,
1 meg of RAM (upgrading to 2 Meg this week) and 2 Miniscribe 3650 40 Meg
Hard drives. I would like to set the system up to use 2 terminals, and run a
MS-DOS shell of some sorts. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not unless you replace the CPU with an 80386, such as the Intel Inboard 386.
There is no version of AT&T System V which runs on an 80286 (except the
version for the AT&T 6300-Plus, but that system has special hardware support).

If you do put in an Inboard 386, System V/386 3.2 works just fine - in fact,
I'm posting this message from just such a system.

The system ought to handle 2 terminals, although, depending on the types of
applications they'll be running, you'll probably want more than 2 Meg.
Consider getting memory with the Inboard; it'll be faster than AT bus memory.

To run MS-DOS under System V, you'll need AT&T Simultask-386.

Well, that's not really true. Microport System V/AT does run on
an AT although you should be aware that Microport is currently in
Chapter 11. For further details, see comp.unix.microport.

You have the choice of Microport V/AT (MP is in chapter 11, but the
product is cheap) or Xenix/286 from SCO (which isn't cheap).

If you order from MP I would do it either COD or credit card. I can't
see sending money to a company for a product intil I get it. Some people
will try to tell you that Xenix isn't UNIX, but it is based on AT&T
code, although some of the system management stuff has been hacked.

Note that the Xenix C compiler is not PCC, and that it will produce
MS-DOS executables if you have a use for that kind of thing. I ran Xenix
for 3+ years and it was satisfactory for my uses. Based on the systems
at work I would rate Xenix as more reliable than Microport.

Maybe not directly from AT&T, but both Microport System V/AT and SCO Xenix
System V are System V compatible (i.e. SVID compliant), and run on '286
based IBM PC AT compatibles. Note, they are not the latest version.

Both have MS-DOS shell support -- DOS Merge, and SCO Vp/ix.
