[comp.unix.questions] How do we obtain wide-area FTP access.

rp@osc.COM (Rich Patterson) (06/15/89)

Hi,
Sorry for the naive nature of this question but ... I don't know
how to bring our system onto the "net" so we can access sites via ftp.
Any pointers to documents or information on what hardware, software,
sponsorship etc. is needed. Thanks in advance.

The free ride days are just about over. Even companies which do
billions in government business are being told to buy their own internet
connection. There is probably a commercial net which you can join which
connects to the other nets. Prices for various regional nets which I
have seen are in the range of $30-60k, not something you want to do for
your home system.

A commercial net will provide things like nameservice, etc. Also plan
on having someone in your organization become a guru for network
services, such as bind.
