The problem with lyrics today isn't that they're unintelligible. Frankly, that's about the only interest most songs generate. I'm very tired of songs sitting in one rhythmic pattern for three or for minutes, repeating a "hook" two, three or more times (both words and music repeated verbatim). I'm also pretty tired of singers sounding so desparate, or grandiose about the most mundane subjects. The small but ever growing influence of jazz on pop is greatly appreciated for the infusion of newer harmonies; maybe it will convince future vocalists to develop a little technique (beyond screaming, whining and slurring) as well. As for me, I'll continue to get more satisfaction out of ten seconds of Stravinsky or Berio than out of a whole album of ___________. (Fill in the blank with a pop-rock vocalist). (Gentle Giant and Joni Mitchell are "popular" musicians I can stand) May heavy metal rust in heavy water, Mike Williams UUCP: randvax!sdcrdcf!mike burdvax!sdcrdcf!mike ucla-vax!sdcrdcf!mike cbosgd!sdcrdcf!mike ihnss!sdcrdcf!mike
