[comp.unix.questions] Need source for PD 'awk', or DOS executable

cjoslyn@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Cliff Joslyn) (06/26/89)

I'm a proud MKS toolkit user, but their 'awk' is small memory model, and
I've burst my 64k data bubble.

Is there source for awk somewhere, or a larger memory model PD/shareware
executable for DOS handing around?

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who answered. I've actually heard of GAwk, and
probably should have been more resourceful in checking out obvious ftp
sites (simtel, grape).

Since you qualified your request with "PD/shareware" you probably don't
want to hear that the MKS Awk package includes both large and small model
versions with 8087 support (the MKS Toolkit Awk is small model, no 8087
only). The list price is $99.00 and includes _The Awk Programming
Language_ book.

You probably want PC Gawk the PC port of Gawk, the awk clone from the
Free Software Foundation. The PC Gawk that I have is Version 2.02e.
By now there may be a newer version (if there is, I'd like to get it -
can/will anybody help?). It is compiled using MSC V5.1 large model.
Presumably this means it can handle very large scripts/data - I wouldn't
know I've not written any awk scripts of such monumental size yet.
