Well after posting several messages on the net. I came to the conclusion that the only way to get telnet and ftp to work with resolv.conf on the sun is to use yp. Which I hate with a passion. So what i need now is information (source code would help) on how to write a program like nslookup that i can query the server and get an ip address and pass it on to telnet and ftp in a batch file. Sounds crude i know but i could not locate any source for telnet or ftp. Besides this way I can use the program on any machine and not have to worry about running yp on any of them. By the way who thought up the nightmare called yp. I can see a great use for it, but in an environment where everyone has their own workstation with its own passwd file that they maintain it is easier to just mail them things like /etc/hosts to update their system.
