[comp.unix.questions] UUCP question

I found this this in /usr/spool/uucp/.Old/Old-Log-1:

...
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-14:06:06,26687,0) OK (startup)
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-14:06:11,26687,0) REMOTE REQUESTED (hp4nl!D.ctisbvENZS2 --> cti
sbv!D.hp4nlSNZS2 (news))
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-14:06:40,26687,1) BAD READ (expected ')
uucp hp4nl (8/2-14:06:40,26687,1) FAILED (conversation complete)
uucp hp4nl (8/2-15:06:43,27046,0) FAILED (LOGIN FAILED)
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-15:08:26,27046,0) SUCCEEDED (call to hp4nl )
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-15:08:31,27046,0) OK (startup)
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-15:08:34,27046,0) REMOTE REQUESTED (hp4nl!D.ctisbvENZS2 --> cti
sbv!D.hp4nlSNZS2 (news))
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-15:08:34,27046,0) PERMISSION (DENIED)
uucp hp4nl  (8/2-15:08:39,27046,0) REMOTE REQUESTED (hp4nl!D.hp4nlXNZS0 --> ctis
bv!X.hp4nlNNZS0 (news))
...

Why is the second attempt to send the newsbatch denied?
This is on an AT&T 3B2/600 running System V release 3.1.1

Most probably the reason is because the D. file (in this case D.ctisbvENZS2)
was already transferred the first time thru:

uucp hp4nl  (8/2-14:06:11,26687,0) REMOTE REQUESTED
	    (hp4nl!D.ctisbvENZS2 --> cti sbv!D.hp4nlSNZS2 (news))

and was mode 600 or somesuch so that uucp would not allow it to be overwritten.
I see this occasionally, and everything works fine, for the X. file will
get transferred during the second conversation:

uucp hp4nl  (8/2-15:08:39,27046,0) REMOTE REQUESTED
	    (hp4nl!D.hp4nlXNZS0 --> ctis bv!X.hp4nlNNZS0 (news))

Now, all the files (D/C/X.) are there, the conversation succeeds, and the
job is run.
