Thanks to all who answered my original posting (there were many).  I now
know what I did and how to duplicate it.  Please no more responses! I'm
drowning in e-mail...

Summary: the message on the subject line was caused by deleting 111 lines
and then hitting Q, which put me in ex mode.  The message is telling me
that after vi, the file has 111 fewer lines.

Again, thanks for the overwhelming response.
