Much of the software I want to control comes from other sites, many of them not restricted to 14 character file names. I run System V and am so restricted. Assume: 1) I am stuck with 14 character file names 2) I do not want to change file names in the source I am managing 3) I am not in a position to insist that people supplying my software restrict themselves to fixed length file names, just that the names are unique in the first 12 characters, that is, no nametoolong.c and nametoolong.h in the same directory Under these conditions, RCS is a lose, I am finding. If the name is too long the commands print an error message and die. SCCS does work, within some difficulty. Mapping the SCCS-file to the working file name requires some extra work if it is overlong, but otherwise things go smoothly. Is there anything I am missing, besides BSD? -- Jeffrey Kegler, Independent UNIX Consultant, Algorists, Inc. jeffrey@algor2.ALGORISTS.COM or uunet!algor2!jeffrey 1762 Wainwright DR, Reston VA 22090
