Having worked at KALX for awhile, here's what I remember of the 'Louie, Louie' story: A Dj at KALX named Mel Chepplowitz, or as he's known on the air, "The Amazing Mystery Dj" put together a few hours of programming consisting of every vinyl-ready version of 'Louie, Louie' that he could find. I don't remember what inspired him to do this. This was then later called the 1st Annual 'Louie, Louie' songfest (or something to that affect). The following year he decided to do it again, but also include tape- recorded (ie. unreleased) versions as well. KALX played promotional spots encouraging their listeners to send in their own versions to be played. All in all he got 12 hours worth. At this point it gets a bit sketchier, but I believe that KFJC shortly thereafter put a notice in their station newsletter proclaiming their attempt to play >24< hours of 'Louie, Louie' versions. I don't know if they made it or not. My favorite version from the 2nd annual KALX show was one submitted by the KALX news department. It consisted of one lonely typewriter tapping out the beat 'xxx xx xxx xx xxx xx xxx xx' (well, you have to imagine it in your head for this to work), puntuated with a line ending bell now and again. ... uw-beaver!eli
