I'm trying to put non-ascii files into SCCS. We have sun os 3.5. I'm uuencodeing the files because I don't believe SCCS in 3.5 supports non ascii files yet. Am I wrong? Also, when I try to use "sccs edit" on the non ascii stuff, and then uudecode them, I get the message "short file" and the files get chopped short. The files are typically 20000 to 30000 bytes in length. They are Futurenet drawing files. Any sugestions ?

I don't think any SCCS will work very well with these drawings, because a small change will cause diff to generate a change of almost every line. An example would be adding one byte, which changes every line from that point on. There are some programs which are better than uuencode at producing files which sync faster. I don't know why your files come up short, I just tried a small example and it worked okay. I keep files like this in zoo archives, using the "versions" feature. With compression they are quite compact, and I suspect that the diffs you get using uuencode are almost as big as the original file. I realize that it depends on how data is changed in the file... -- bill davidsen (davidsen@crdos1.crd.GE.COM -or- uunet!crdgw1!crdos1!davidsen) "The world is filled with fools.
