[comp.unix.questions] can't get csh term terminate when modem drops

powell@issm (Mike Powell "Networks are Nifty") (11/23/89)

I cannot seem to get the shell to terminate when the carrier is lost.
specificly, I cannot get the stty option nohang to be set for the
default shell. I looked in the manual for gettytab and found the
"hc" option which says default do not hangup, how do I change this?

You may have two problems: Hardware and software.

To change the software definition, you need (as root) to edit
/etc/gettytab to eliminate 'hc' if it is set, then probably reboot.

It may be that the cable from the modem to your serial port does
not have the DTR/DSR wires connected -- we have this problem here -- the
installers were told to do it, but didn't, so getty never sees the modem
drop carrier, and merrily goes along, letting people into other people's
accounts with great regularity.
Get a hardware type to check to see that you have all the wires
you should have in your modem cable, and that they are connected up
right. ***SIGH***
