[comp.unix.questions] SCSI adapters and my ST506 drive

kaleb@mars.jpl.nasa.gov (Kaleb Keithley) (11/29/89)

I have a 386 clone, with an RLL hard disk controller. I am interested
in getting ESIX, however, the folks at Everex told me that they do not,
and will not (ever), support RLL controller cards. I have a large disk
drive (106 Meg) which I do not want to just throw away.

Does anyone know of a hard drive controller that will look like a SCSI
controller to the OS, but plug into my ST506 drive.

please e-mail responses, and I will summarize if appropriate.

Benson, you are so mercifully devoid of the ravages of intelligence.

ESIX may not _admit_ to running their OS on RLL drives, but if you're
using an Adaptec 2372(A or B) it'll work just fine. Similarly for ESDI,
at least with an Adaptec 2322 (I have the "B" version) or the WD 1007-WA2.
RLL and ESIX operation works, in fact, with all the 386-UNIXes I've played
with.

The "bonus" with ESIX is that (at least, with Rev. C) it also supports the
Adaptec 1542A (must be "A") SCSI controller card.

Now if ESIX would just get a faster file system and faster X-Windows
implementation...
