[comp.unix.questions] "Can't find file" when trying to run a program

ekuns@zodiac.rutgers.edu (Eddie Kuns) (12/04/89)

I'm having problems getting a program to run under UNIX on a MIPS M/120. When
I run the program, I get the message:

Can't open file

My first thought was that this (3-Meg) program was printing out the message, so
I used dbx and said: stop in anmain (the mainline routine). Then I typed run.
I got the same message. 'step' or 'where' or any such command gave me a
message telling me that the program wasn't active. I tried 'stop at ....' in
various places in the mainline routine just for grins to see if it made it
anywhere like the first executable statment, and this produced the same results
as the first attempt.

I know that's it's not complaining that it cannot find the executable, as dbx
has no trouble loading the executable in and finding the source. And dbx gives
me the same message when I try to run the program from there. So -- it must be
UNIX that is giving me that message.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing that message or what a
possible cure could be? I had thought at one point that it was complaining
about wanting fortran units assigned, but it never executes any code!

Please use private EMail to reply -- our NEWS reader here is very unreliable.
(If you don't read stuff on the one day a week when it feels like getting new
messages, you're out of luck. You can't read them the next day. :( And you've
missed the previous week of posts anyway, because it only reads one day's worth
of messages.) I'll post a summary if people say they want one.

Thanks.
