[comp.unix.questions] Procomm Plus, Version 1.1A

aaronh@ms.uky.edu (Aaron David Herskowitz) (12/10/89)

I use Procomm Plus to log into the system here from my pc. I have a
problem with using vi with procomm. Whenever you try to go beyond the
top of the file, or do other "boundry conditions" I get garbage all
across the screen (mostly numbers.)

I was wondering if anyone else has or has had this problem and if they
know a fix (some changes in setting of procomm, etc...)

I am using an IBM PS/2 Model 50-021 with an Avatex 2400 modem. I am
logging into a sequent symetry running dynix.

Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

After receiving mail from many of you, I realized that I had forgotten
to post some more needed information about my problem.

Again, I am having problems with vi when I log into my schools sequent
symetry running dynix. I am using an IBM PS/2 Model 50-021 with an
Avatex 2400. The software I am using is Procomm Plus Version 1.1A,
with a terminal emulation of a tvi950. I have a VGA screen (if that
matters.)

Usually, if you try ot go beyond the top or bottom the the file in vi,
or try any other "wierd-stuff" like going past the end or begining of
a line I get things like this:

013042034023

and I am put into insert mode. This breaks and deletes part of the
line I was working on.

Would it be better for me to use a different terminal emulation? The
tvi950 seemed to be the best from what I had to choose from.

I also have a problem similar to this when I use less and hit space at
the end of a file. It "freaks-out" and keeps repeating the same
screen over and over.

Again, any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated so that I might
correct this problem.

Your terminal emulation in Procomm+ should match whatever you are set for
at the host ($TERM); usually vt100 unless someone has tweeked it, however....
I too am using Procomm+ from 2 different brands of PCs going into 3 different
systems where I am set for vt100 and have problems with vi similar to yours
(although not identical). I am beginning to think that Procomm+ has
rather poor terminal emulation. I was about to do some testing to see
if any other emulations would work better. Guess I will skip TVI950.
I was going to try ansi next.

If anyone else has a solution or solid information about terminal emulation
in Procomm+ (as it relates to vi), I too would be interested in hearing
about it.

Yes, the vt102 emulation in Procomm Plus 1.1A is a step backwards
from that in Procomm 2.4.2. I've run vttest (on a BSD machine) on Procomm
Pluss 1.1A, and Procomm 2.4.2 performed better.

Try falling back to 2.4.2, or perhaps you could define a termcap for
the ansi terminal in Plus?
