A few people asked me to post any good responses I received in regard
to my request for help in finding a command line editor with recall
ability. I would say that the best solution I've encountered so far
is a tool called ile, made available to me by David Elliott
(dce@smsc.sony.com 192.65.137.2). David was kind enough to make this
available via anonymous FTP, and it may still be there (in ~ftp/pub).
ile is a single c program that, in its simplest form, allows
command line recall and editing. The environmental variable TERM
must be set appropriately (I had to change mine from vt100 to vt220.
Alliant may have had the termcap database incorrect, or else my two
terminals [HDS 3200 and TEK XN5] aren't properly emulating vt100).
I have used it with the c shell, but it could likely be used with
the Bourne shell and other programs.
ile was developed at Evans & Sutherland by Robert C. Pendleton.
I have also retreived a copy of the Bourne again shell, developed as
part of the GNU SW set by Brian Fox. I haven't tried to use it yet,
as the machines I want to put it on aren't listed in the set of
TARGET machine in the Makefile. I'm waiting for further instructions.
Another person mentioned fep (front end processor), available from
uunet.uu.net. Vol 16, fep/part*. I haven't tried this yet.
