As long as all this experimentation is going on, what about the old trick of dumping salt on half of a lemon and rubbing the lemon over the copper. Even cheaper than ketchup, for those of us with copper cleaner trees outside our back doors. (And if that doesn't work, try mixing the lemon, salt, ketchup, and Comet together. No, no, forget I said that.)

Vinegar by itself will not do anything. However, I've used a paste of common table salt and vinegar for years to clean the bottom of some Revere ware pots.
