At my work, we have difficulty loading the MIT X11 release 4 tapes on a AT&T 3B15 running system V r.2.1.1. We were told by an AT&T technical rep. that the problem lies in incompatibilities between the tar format expected by the System V utility and the BSD format which is written on the distribution tape. Upon mounting a tape and entering th etar -xv at the shell prompt, the tape moves and the message "Directory Checksum Error" prints. The first file of apparently coherent and intact source code is loaded. This happened on each of th efour 9 track tapes of the distribution and both the original 2.1.1 and 3.0 releases of tar. (tar 3.0 compiled from AT&T source). Both tar's were used to successfully dump and load other files to and from 9 track tape. All distribution tapes can be successfully read and appear to be error free. Tape drives all appear to be ok. We welcome anybody's insight to th ebroblem or a way around it. Thanks, Kobi
