Will the Unix Dump/Restore utilities be available on Unix 5.4? Will there be a new, perhaps better utility for backup. What about tar and cpio. Will both still be supported? Ric Urrutia Taos Mountain Software 415 964-5411 tms@cup.portal.com

They do not appear to be supported for the S5 filesystem type. Tar and cpio are both supported. Tar still "doesn't copy empty directories or special files". Cpio uses a new format, but can still read and write the old format using some non-intuitive flags. -- Charles. {sun, ucbvax, pyramid, uunet}!unisoft!cander

Yeah, AT&T threw out "dump" and "restor"(sic) for the V7 file system and its S5 descendant a while ago. If you're sufficiently ambitious, they can be retrieved from a V7 or 4.1(sic)BSD tape, although they'd probably require some tweaking to work with the different block sizes supported by the S5 version of the V7 file system. The 4.1BSD versions are probably the best ones; note that "restor" (yes, there's only one "e" there) isn't quite as capable as "restore", although if you're willing to sink this much effort into them you can probably improve it further.

SVR4.0 Does in addition to tar & cpio & dd also include "backup" carried forward from the Xenix Environment. Extract from the man page: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ backup(1) (XENIX Compatibility Package) backup(1) NAME backup - performs backup functions SYNOPSIS backup [-t] [-p | -c | -f files | -u "user1 [user2]"] -d device backup -h DESCRIPTION A complete backup must be done before a partial backup can be done. Raw devices rather than block devices should always be used. The program can handle multi-volume backups. The program will prompt the user when it is ready for the next medium. The program will give you an estimated number of floppies/tapes that will be needed to do the backup. Floppies must be formatted before the backup is done. Tapes do not need to be formatted. If backup is done to tape, the tape must be rewound. 40 lines deleted. DRS/NX 4.0 Printed 13/3/90 =========== Lars. -- The ICL DRS6000 | Lars Tunkrans DRS Systems support Phone +46 (0)76096368.
