[net.cooks] More Warnings on eating raw shellfish

An article in yesterday's (March 13) New York Times said people
are again urged not to eat raw clams and oysters. Doctors have
isolated a virus that lives in clams and oysters that can cause
gastro-intestinal problems. The study said that healthy people may or
may not be harmed by the virus, but individuals with liver and immune
diseases should not eat raw shellfish. Also, quick steaming of shell-
fish will not kill the virus. You must steam the shellfish for about
5 to 6 minutes to kill the little buggers.
Just thought you folks out there who eat raw clams and
oysters would like to know this.
