On Ultrix 3.1, if everything is set up correctly, I think you should 
be able to do this using just the lpr command.

You don't.  The LN03 Plus is not a PostScript compatible printer.  There is
however a $3000 upgrade to turn the LN03 plus into an LN03ScriptPrinter
