We have a new Exabyte 8mm tape unit on our MIPS machine and will soon be getting one for our Sun. The MIPS has 4 gigabytes of disk storage. We've not yet decided on a backup procedure for the machine, but if we decide to do incrementals we would ideally like to be able to put everything on one tape. However, I don't see how dump can be used for this--it always starts a new dump at the start of a tape. Has anyone out there devised a way to do multifile dumps? I'd appreciate hearing any comments from netland. Btw, we will likely have to do dumps on an inactive system. The MIPS machine is being used for a large Oracle database and the only safe way to back it up is when the system is idle. I would like to do full backups every night, but it will take more than one tape for a full backup so incremental dumps are the only solution I can see if we want to avoid downtime during the day. -- Peter Steele, Microcomputer Applications Analyst Acadia University, Wolfville, NS, Canada B0P1X0 (902)542-2201x121 UUCP: {uunet|watmath|utai|garfield}!cs.dal.ca!aucs!Peter BITNET: Peter@Acadia Internet: Peter@AcadiaU.CA
