[comp.unix.questions] Problems Booting a ESSENTIAL UTILIT

srm@occrsh.ATT.COM (12/29/90)

Per your info, you were getting the following:
--
--> 'ESSENTIAL UTILITIES'
--> 'FW ERROR I-03 UNEXPECTED FAULT'
-->               'EXECUTION HALTED'
--
--> What do I do now?

According to the Sys Admin Guide (R3.2.1):

	The processor checked any one of a number of fault types; most
	likely an external memory fault due to a parity error or an
	attemped access to an unequipped memory location.

	Additional information can be obtained using "errorinfo"....

This was taken directly from the manual. There was a note of caution.

	Executing the errorinfo fimrware-level command outputs and
	clears the expanded error information stored in NVRAM. Be
	sure to either copy the displayed output or have a printer
	enabled when the command is first executed.

I do have a question for you. I am having to make a few assumptions here.
First, I assume that you are upgrading from a release at least R3.2.1 or later.
Second, I assume that you have a SCSI tape drive that was in functional
order prior to the upgrade attempt. If not, I question the addressing that
you are supplying on what device to boot from. It may be related to
the electronics of the drive itself. Does the tape attempt to start?
If not, I would verify it is plugged in properly. If it is (power cables
plugged in right and SCSI cables plugged in right), I might suspect that
the power supply driving the tape drive has gone bye-bye.

Good luck
