Our site is using RCS on a Convex. I'd like to be able to use the same
system on our new DECsystem (Ultrix) instead of SCCS, which is supplied
by DEC. I remember reading some time ago that one of the advantages of
RCS over SCCS was that RCS was in the public domain, while SCCS wasn't.
Can anybody tell me whether this is correct and, if so, where the
sources for RCS can be obtained (ftp?). If not, are there any vendors?
Thanks in advance.

RCS is copylefted, which is not the same as public domain, but it does mean the source is freely available. You can FTP it from the following sites: site filename archive.cs.ruu.nl /pub/GNU/rcs-5.5.tar.Z cs.purdue.edu pub/RCS/rcs.5_5.tar.Z prep.ai.mit.edu pub/gnu/rcs-5.5.tar.Z uunet.uu.net gnu/rcs-5.5.tar.Z It works best with GNU diff 1.15; look for diff-1.15.tar.Z.

RCS is available for FTP from prep.ai.mit.edu (18.71.0.38). It is currently up to revision 5.5 and is backwardly compatible through version 3.x. The RCS documentation also recommends you get a hold of GNU's diff while you're there to make RCS a bit faster. I've been using it for the past month or so with no complaints or problems. Eric PS: While you're there, also get Emacs, Awk, Groff, Ghostscript, GCC, G++, GAS, GDB, ... :-) -- Eric Peterson <> epeterson@encore.com <> uunet!encore!epeterson Encore Computer Corp. * Ft.
