[comp.unix.questions] why does anonymous ftp need /etc/passwd?

meyer@cambium.uoregon.edu (David M. Meyer) (02/05/91)

	Why does ftpd want you to have ~ftp/etc/{passwd,group}
	(at least on SunOS)?

	Thanks

	Dave

ftpd wants to find the default shell for the user.
It checks $SHELL and /etc/passwd.
