As a newcomer to the unix world I hope Im my questions aren't in space.... Has BSD been ported to the 386? The Feb issue of Dr. Dobbs makes mentions that it is available and sources can be obtained from the Computer Systems Research Group at Berkeley. A notice in the editorial of the March issue states that the update to the Networking Release Distribution will be available in Feb. It then goes on to say that the Feb distribution will not boot on a 386, and that it only requires a license/distribution fee. ????? What exactly is missing from the $100 Unix clone Coherent? Anyone know when the GNU kernel will be finished and if it will run on a 386? Thanks in advance. Tom Johnson Southeastern Mass Univ Student

It's System V with some PD stuff thrown in and a LOT of bugs. Don't depend upon this for a full-fledged system (e.g. more things core dumped in my attempt to build Elm on it than anything I've ever seen). It's cool as an experiment, but not to rely upon. One major fault is that it can only run 'small model' programs; that is, the executable can be no larger than 64K. Also, the sum total of all variables must be less than 64K for each program. This includes all 'malloc' calls. --- John Gordon Internet: gordon@osiris.cso.uiuc.edu #include <disclaimer.h> gordon@cerl.cecer.army.mil #include <clever_saying.h>
