Hi, I am having trouble reaching an FTP host in West Germany. Here is a sample: /u/mobius/greg>ping ftp.thp.uni-koeln.de vax.ph-cip.Uni-Koeln.DE is alive /u/mobius/greg>ftp !$ ftp ftp.thp.uni-koeln.de ftp: connect: Connection timed out ftp> I thought that if ping(1) reported that a host was alive, then a direct IP connection to that hosts exists. If that is true, why can't I FTP to this thing? I have mailed to the system administrator, and he says that I am the first one to identify this problem. I have no trouble FTP'ing to other hosts in Europe and as far away as Japan and Australia. Can someone help me with this and/or give me more information on what I should be doing differently? Please EMAIL replies to "greg@viewlogic.com".
