I've been backing up directories from a DECstation running Ultrix to another DECstation that has an 8mm Exabyte tape drive on it, using a command like: tar cf - dir_name | rsh remote_machine "dd ibs=10240 obs=10240 of=/dev/rmt0h" This usually works pretty well, but every now and then on reading the tape (with a "tar t") I get a message that the tar is continued on a second tape even though it was only written to one: tar: File dir_name is continued on archive 2 tar: Please load archive 2 on /dev/rmt0h & press RETURN Is there some magic character sequence indicating a second volume that I might be matching coincidentally in one of the files I'm backing up? Chances of that seem pretty slim. Any ideas? -- ----- Don Thomson ----- MACC, 1210 W. Dayton, Madison, WI 53706 ------------- (608) 262-0138 thomson@macc.wisc.edu / thomson@wiscmacc.bitnet
