[net.wanted] DISSPLA on UNIX??

govern (11/10/82)

A month ago someone mentioned that the DISSPLA graphics package had been
ported to UNIX. Does anyone know how I can get it, for a VAX 11/780?

(Sending things to the IBM downstairs is not adequate; we need to do things
on our own machine for accountability reasons.)

Sources within BTL would be nice, but paperwork and money can be
arranged as needed.

I was under the impression that DISSPLA is a product of ISSCO, and
if this is true it oughtn't be copied. The alternatives?
a) it isn't true
b) They'll sell it to you.

As of this writing, DISSPLA has NOT been ported to 4.1bsd Unix.
I don't specifically know about other Unix systems, but I
got the impression that is has not. ISSCO claims that DISSPLA
will be available in March,1983 for 4.1bsd Unix. If you want it,
let then know. It has been a major effort to get them to realize
there was an untapped customer base of Unix users out there.
Your voice would help.

Have you tried calling an ISSCO salesman and asking him about the
availablity of DISSPLA? That would seem to be the first step.

For any Universities considering buying it, ISSCO has a
very good educational discount (about 75%). We have
been quoted under $20K. I believe a commercial license is $78K.

DISSPLA is a product of ISSCO, and last I heard (~6 months ago) they
thought the Unix market was too small to port DISSPLA to. DISSPLA
is a rather large package, and would need a VAX at minimum to run
effectively.

An alternative to DISSPLA you might consider is DI-3000 from
Precision Visuals, Inc. DI-3000 is much more flexible than DISSPLA,
is CORE-compatible, uses as much of the intelligence of the output
hardware as it catn (DISSPLA treats everyghthing as if it coldwere a CALCOMP
plotter), and costs less. IDDI-3000 does not yet have some of the
fancy features of DISSPLA (map projections & cosatlasline databases, for
instandce), but . DI-33000 is sold in source-code Fortran-66 (with apporppriate
non-disclosure agreemsents).
PS - I have no commercial connection with any company (work for Uncle Sam),
but was very impressed by a recent saldes seminar from PVI.

DISSPLA is available on UNIX, for 4.1BSD and USG 4.0, VAX systems,
at least at BTL. I have ordered a copy, which has not yet arrived,
so I have no comments on ease of setup/use, but here is the
procedure for orders within BTL:

Send a letter to H.B. Rawson
			 WH 3A-302
			 Bell Labs Whippany NJ.

requesting DISSPLA, giving your department and case numbers.
He will tell you who to send a tape to. The documentation
can be obtained from the WH Comp. Library. Along with the
tape, you should also send format info (cpio, etc.).

I don't know who did the port to UNIX, but have heard it works well.
