[comp.sources.d] Can't compile Compress 4.0 on Gould

wmk@BASKIN.UUCP (xxxxxx x xxxxxxxxx) (11/12/86)

I have a copy of compress 4.0 from mod.sources that I want to install
on our Gould PN6040 running UTX 3.2. It gives the following error
message when I try to 'make compress' using the distributed Makefile:
ld: warning: near subsegments too big for 5 bases
    ld: compress.o:
no base for reloc of memref instruction at text+1FC relative to symbol _bgnd_flag
    ld:
41 more 'no base ' errors
    *** Error code 4

    Stop.
I have used the space analyzer 'span' to provide a farlist to the compiler,
but it still gives the same message.

Am I missing an obvious step? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Please
send suggestions to

Thanks,
