[comp.sources.d] MDQS User Survey Results

dave@walldata.UUCP (Dave Wilson) (12/21/86)

Here is a summary of the responses I received to the MDQS - User Survey
that was posted Oct 24, 1986.

1. What version of MDQS are you running?
	Versions 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11(Released Oct 1986).

2. What machines/operating system versions does your MDQS run on?
	Celerity 1230 running 4.2 BSD
	Cray-2 running UNICOS -- a SysV OS
	HP 9000-300 running HP-UX.
	ISI 68K based unix system.
	Onyx C8002M running Sys III/Onix 3.0.3
	Perkin-Elmer 3210 running SV
	SUN 2/120, 3/50, 3/180
Sperry 1100/80 (mainframe) under "1100 OS" (known also as "EXEC 8").
	Vax 11/750 running SysV
	Vax 730, Vax 750, Vax 780, Vax 785 running BSD 4.[123]
	Zenith Z-151(PC/XT) running Venix 2.0

3. Do you have MDQS in a network setup? (Inter-machine queueing)
If so, what kind of networks are supported under MDQS?
Several sites do not use MDQS over any networks.
	Ethernet networks are most common.
	TCP/IP protocols are most common.
Some sites are using UUCP with the 't' TCP/IP protocol
	or the old 'g' protocol.
Most MDQS environments have mixed machine/operating systems
	on networked machines.

4. What modifications have you made to MDQS?
Most users made no major changes to the MDQS version they run.
Many users have implemented servers to different devices.
	Known devices are:
Versatec, servers: unix-plot, versaplot, vcat(CAT emulation),
				line-printer.
		QMS 800/1200/2400 laser-printers, servers:
				line-printer, lgcat(CAT emulation)
		Printronix line-printer, servers: line-printer/plotter
		LN01 laser-printer
HP Laserjet+, servers : DVI driver
		XEROX penquine
		Imagen laser-printers
		NEC Spinwriters 5515, 5520, 7715, 7725 spinwriters
		Teletype 40 chain printer
		Smartwriter
		Data Products 2610
		Laserwriter w/Postscript
		Okidata 82, 92, 292
		C.Itoh 8510
		Gencom 3404
		DEC LN03
One MDQS user supports printers connected to AUX ports on terminals.
	MDQS modifications include:
load limit control for MDQS devices: device will not be
activated if load average is above limit value.
mdqsdaemon will service multiple queues per device equally
device shutdown option to qdev: disable device but allow the
			current job to complete.
added message to disable/shutdown option of qdev
added stty options to print servers
added environment variable setting for shserver
made no copy option default for qpr.
fixed bugs(I will notify BRL about these)
only privileged users can use higher priorities on jobs.
		handle Sys V process groups
fix servers to restart print jobs on write failures.

5. What features would you like to see in MDQS?
The most common topic was improved network support.
EG: qstat(1), qmod(1), qdev(1) that work across network of systems.
I will be conversing with BRL on this topic also.
	Other features of interest are:
Remote job entry support: Remote 'batch' with staging
			and return of files.
		Better shutdown and restart facilities:
(e.g., restart after a paper jam by backing up 5 pages).

I have begun to converse with BRL about these results, and I will post
further details to comp.sources.d as progress is made. I would like to see
all of the modifications incorporated into the next MDQS release. I am hoping
to get the network support issue address somewhat also in the next release.

Thanks to all Respondents,
