[comp.sources.d] Beta-testers needed

merlin@hqda-ai.UUCP (David S. Hayes) (05/14/87)

I have a new program (OK, a new version of an old program).
The program is AGEF (age files), which was posted to the old
net.sources a few months ago. I'd like to post the updated
version, but I need to have it tested first.

The program is intended to help with management of news
articles, although it could be used to aid with any sort of
archive. It produces reports like the following:

% cd /usr/spool/news/comp ; agef -d 5,10,15 [a-d]*

Previous versions of this program have been heavily dependent on
the 4.n Berkeley directory reading routines. Now that Fred Gwyn
(gwyn@brl.arpa) has posted public-domain routines to the net, I
have rewritten my program to use them for System V machines. I
have also put in the appropriate stuff for old System III
computers.

My machine is a Sun, which does have the Berkeley routines.
I need one or two volunteers who have real, honest, fur-tru AT&T
Unix, who would be willing to give this a test.

The program is not large. The sources are 12k. There's also
a makefile, and a man page. Local volunteers have already given
it a pretty good going over, and no problems were reported.

If you're interested, send me some e-mail. Please describe
the type of system(s) you would be using for the test. Thank you,

The two dozen or so volunteers already mailed in are plenty,
thanks. I selected four people, based on

     Variety of systems represented.
Ability to devote time to bug-hunting.
Reliability of mail paths from me to the volunteers.
How much AGEF might help those volunteering.

My thanks to all those who have volunteered. I will try to
get the tested, approved version of AGEF out as soon as I get word
back from the test crew.

If you really wanted to test AGEF, though, please don't
despair. I'm sure there will be some last-minute bug creep in, so
you'll all get a chance to look for that. And, of course, there's
always the extensions for version 4....

     Thanks again,

Yes, my apologies to Doug, and the net. I realized my
mistake very soon after putting the article up. I tried to use
the vnews cancel command, but for some reason, vnews wouldn't do
it for me. The article escaped before I could assault the problem
any further.

Again, my apologies. I correspond regularly with Doug - I
must have left my brain in 'idle' that day...
