I'd like to offer a better suggestion: comp.archives should be
coming into existence shortly (well over 200 votes for,
essentially none against); one of the things I am going to do is
to keep a registry of available stuff.

So, the solution to the subject line problem, and to a whole host
of other problems, is to keep things the way they are in the
current source/binary/what-have-you groups, and post the relevant
information to comp.archives.  I am going to open a discussion on
the format of comp.archives on comp.misc, to which follow-ups are
directed.
