Our Dept. of Communications Studies is looking for an online conferencing system which supports at least 10 participants simultaneously. Each participant should be able to write messages which everybodey else should be able to see. This could be done by - a separate window for each participant or - a single window, but in this case messages must be prefixed by an identifiation tag (initials, etc.) In a windowing system the following features would be desirable: - the ability to resize and overlap windows - scrolling a window backwards to see information which had already gone off the top of that window - the ability to send "private" messages to specific participants without those being seen by everybody else. It should also be possible for participants to run programs or at least be able to display text files in their window, so the results are visible for the others. The ability to save/print a transcript of the session is essential. Preferably such a system should run under UNIX or VMS, where participants are logging on from PCs via modems/telnet/rlogin, etc., but we would also like to hear about other options, e.g. a PC network with a central server, etc. A specialised terminal emulation program for the PCs would be another possibility, with a central "conference server" on the mainframe. We do have the "phone" software which was posted some time ago, but that is not quite sophisticated enough for what is required. Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions. I will summarize interesting contributions. Bernd Gill Ph.
