From jfh@rpp386.Dallas.TX.US (The Beach Bum): > I'm posting so you won't quick go add a mailpath for comp.sources.misc > as sources-misc@<backbone>. I made a submission to sources-misc@uunet > and it bounced ;-(. What gives??? From allbery@ncoast.UUCP (Brandon S. Allbery): >UUNET is the exception: they do NOT carry the backbone moderator's aliases. Nope. I just ftp'd /usr/lib/aliases from uunet, here's a fragment... # Beginning of list of aliases for posting to moderated groups. # Last update mailed by spaf@cs.purdue.EDU at Tue Aug 23 12:22:24 1988 fgrep sources /tmp/uu-aliases alt-sources-amiga:sugar!amiga-sources amiga-sources:sugar!amiga-sources comp-sources-amiga: amiga-sources-request@j.cc.purdue.edu comp-sources-atari-st: atari-sources@ssyx.ucsc.edu comp-sources-games: games@saab.cna.tek.com comp-sources-mac: macintosh@felix.uucp comp-sources-misc: sources-misc@ncoast.uucp comp-sources-unix: rsalz@uunet.uu.net comp-sources-x: x-sources@x2.wyse.com alt-sources-amiga: amiga-sources@sugar.uu.net I think there's some other confusion going on. What IS the proper address expansion for comp-sources-misc@backbone-site ? Brandon said it's sources-misc@backbone, which is wrong; perhaps he meant comp-sources-misc, which always worked, but probably needs to be updated. Perhaps he main sources-misc@uunet, which might be what the first form needs to be updated to? I dunno, sources-misc isn't a valid alias on uunet, and comp-sources-misc still points to ncoast. I'm confused. Of course, this all becomes more important when the moderator of comp.sources.unix takes a hike... /r$ -- Please send comp.sources.unix-related mail to rsalz@uunet.uu.net.

Backbones tend to update moderators' aliases faster, and there are fewer of them; thus, I'd prefer to have only backbones know where the group lives. After all, *everything*'ll get screwed up if someone else becomes moderator.... If comp-sources-misc@backbone is the official alias, then by all means use it. ++Brandon -- Brandon S. In article <12846@ncoast.UUCP> allbery@ncoast.UUCP (Brandon S. Allbery) writes: >If comp-sources-misc@backbone is the official alias, then by all means use >it. Of course it is. The algorithm 2.11 news uses to mail to moderators is to replace dots in the newsgroup name with hyphens, and then stuff this in where the %s appears in your "backbone" line in your /usr/lib/news/mailpaths file. So it's comp-sources-misc@backbone, and similarly for all other moderated groups. -- - Joe Buck, card-carrying ACLU liberal jbuck@epimass.epi.com, or uunet!epimass.epi.com!jbuck, or jbuck%epimass.epi.com@uunet.uu.net for old Arpa sites
