[comp.sources.d] Enhancements to Screen

mikel@ritcsh.UUCP (Mike Leibowo) (10/13/88)

Hi,

In '87, Oliver Laumann from the Technical University of Berlin released
a public domain program called screen which offers multiple terminal sessions
through a single terminal. Each session uses the full screen and has a
vt100 emulator built in. This allowed real brain damaged terminals to
have some of the features of a vt100.

Anyhow, I made some enhancements to the code last week. I have added a
200 line transcript history to each session and the ability to page or scroll
upwards to see stuff that has gone off of the top of the screen. I have also
added the ability to transfer data between sessions (cut and paste).

If there is enough interest, I will post the updated sources. I would like
to send the updates to Oliver Laumann if possible, but I have no idea
how to reach him. If you are still around and reading USENET, could you
reply to this please... Or, if he isn't reading, if somebody knows him
or works with him, could you please tell me his nodename, maybe a path,
and his userid?

Thanks,

No, please don't. I'm currently working on a new release of
screen (it will support multiple character sets, a client library
that allows programs to open windows, etc., and a function to
`detach' screen from the terminal and resume the screen session
at a later point of time possibly on a different terminal).

I will send the new release to the moderator of comp.sources.unix
in a couple of weeks. If you mail me your modifications within
the next few days, I may incorporate them into the new release
(provided I like them, of course). Otherwise I suggest that
you wait until the new release of screen has appeared in
comp.sources.unix and then post the diffs with respect to the
new release.

Regards,

YES! YES! YES! Please post your changes! They sound great! I've been using
screen since I pulled it off the net last year. Its great!

By the way, I went back to the README Oliver Laumann put out with the source
and found some addresses for you. It was difficult for me to track down
the addresses - I think the source code is the appropriate place for this
information along with the copyright and/or author of the code. Anyway,
here is what he put in his README for addresses:

	    net@tub.BITNET
	US: pyramid!tub!net
    Europe: unido!tub!net

I assume his login is net. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I have received hundreds of letters asking for the enhancements I've made
to screen. I am going to wait for Olivers changes to appear and then I
will add my changes. My changes should appear shortly after Oliver's.
