We are looking at various programs to analyze tapes. Users frequently come to us from other installations and other operating systems and want their data unloaded on one of our machines (running IBM/MVS, DEC10/TOPS10, VAX/VMS, and UNIX). The programs we have seen to figure out whats on a tape (ie read the labels if they are there, otherwise report on block counts and tape marks and make guess as to orgin and format) are pretty poor. What do you use on your machines (UNIX and otherwise)? Alex Nishri University of Toronto
