[comp.sources.d] New release of GnuTeX, a graphing program for LaTeX

dfk@romeo.cs.duke.edu (David F. Kotz) (01/11/89)

A common problem with LaTeX is its inability to handle pictures.
There are some packages to handle this, and I have one specifically
oriented to producing graphs in LaTeX.

Last year I announced the release of "GnuTeX", a version of gnuplot
1.0.3 that is changed to include a LaTeX terminal driver. It is so
expanded that I changed the name, although the user-interface is
really the same as that for gnuplot. This was gnutex 1.0.

I am now releasing a substantially improved version, with several bug
fixes, many new enhancements, and a new, extensive manual. This is
gnutex 1.3. See below for information on obtaining this.

DESCRIPTION:
GnuTeX will plot functions and data files in a variety of ways and
produce a LaTeX picture environment to be included in your document.
It will label the tics on the axes. You may add a title and axes
labels. You may add labels at arbitrary locations on the graph, with
arrows. It will make a key of the plots for you. You may define your
own styles for the symbols and lines used to make the curves. It will
define the x and y scales automatically.

I use it all the time, as do many other students and faculty here. I
think it is easy to use.

GnuTeX is available by anonymous ftp from duke.cs.duke.edu
(128.109.140.1), in the file pub/gnutex.tar.Z (150K compressed).
Alternatively, there is a shar-format file there. If you have older
versions of GnuTeX, patch files are also available there, although the
recent patch file is bigger than the compressed tar file for the
entire source.

Due to the large number of requests from users that could not ftp the
program, this was submitted to comp.sources.unix over SIX MONTHS AGO,
but has never appeared. Thus, the complete source of GnuTeX version
1.3 will be posted in three parts in comp.text.
