To raise a point, I can think of a number of cases where (long)3 and 3L are not necessarily equivalent and the former would in fact generate 'incorrect' code. I leave it as an exercise to determine what conditions would cause this to occur, interested readers can email me, with enough response I may be persuaded to summarise and post some sample solutions.
