[comp.sources.d] What has happened to comp.sources.misc?????

paf@unixprt.UUCP (Paul Fronberg) (02/21/89)

I have not seen anything from comp.sources.misc for quite a while. Does it
still exist???

As quoted from <379@unixprt.UUCP> by paf@unixprt.UUCP (Paul Fronberg):

What happened was a massive upheaval. First, the move to uunet itself
caused a time delay as postings were forwarded from ncoast (even if they
were sent to the correct address, as the net-wide aliases could not be
changed overnight). Then there was a foulup in the aliases, which caused at
least two postings to be bounced. And now I have had to completely
reorganize myself, since I now have an archive to maintain. (The bad and
good news all in one sentence.) The changes are as yet untested; I hope to
complete testing and debugging (of course ;-) within the next day or two,
after which there are some 20-30 postings in the chute.

The good news, as I mentioned above, is that I now have an official archive
(and UUNET is now an official archive site -- don't you just *love*
consistency? ;-)

Anyway, it's all coming around. The next batch of changes will happen
around the next volume, and will include switching to rsalz's "cshar"
(except for single originally-unshar'ed files, which will continue to be
wrapped by the world's first shar filter, "dummyshar") and the resumption of
"stash"ing to fix the current reply-address botches.

At risk of getting flamed to death, I will also be explicitly invoking
compilation copyright. I wouldn't trust certain fee-based services as far
as I could throw their PDP-10's. The license will probably be based on the
"rn" license; just to summarize, it will forbid redistribution for a fee (I
do tend to get upset about that) and very little else. I assume that if the
author of a program wanted someone to make money off of it, they'd have
found a distributor for it instead....

(P.S. The first posting to go out after the end of this little hiatus will
be the list of then pending submissions, so people will know what got to me
and what didn't. If your submission isn't in the list, resubmit it.)
(P.P.S. This is the last time I move a newsgroup. If there should be a
next time, I think I'll resign instead. I'm pooped! ;-)
