[comp.sources.d] Public domain version of ksh is available

zeeff@b-tech.ann-arbor.mi.us (Jon Zeeff) (03/13/89)

Does anyone have any reports on this public domain ksh?
Compatibility, portability?

[This is an interesting subject, but better discussed on
comp.sources.d. So I've cross-posted it there and have
directed followups there as well. tww]

It seems to work OK on SunOS 3.5. Pipes don't work at all on any version
of Ultrix (`ls | cat' gives the error "cat: bad file number" or something
to that effect). I haven't had time to look deeply into it yet; if I do,
and I fix it, I'll post fixes somewhere.

Can anyone supply the IP address number for that site? I don't have
domain lookup, and that site was not in my host table...

Thanks!

According to my name server, gpu.utcs.Toronto.EDU has these internet
addresses:

	128.100.100.1
	128.100.102.1

Try the first one first; it's the first that was returned.

I'm also very interested in that. Where can I obtain a copy or even better
can someone post it to either comp.unix.sources or alt.sources.

when I ftp-ed there, I found pub/ksh available, a ReadMe file that I could
get and two directories, ksh & std which were protected...can these be
changed by whoever can change them? Does someone else have this material?

thanks,

This will get you there, but the source is locked up. I asked the
sysadmin about it and he replied that they didn't want to serve as an
archive site for it. Apparently they were quite surprised by the
influx of demands for the program...

The ksh sources as I picked them up are available from urth.cc.buffalo.edu
(128.205.3.21). They'll be around for a little while. They didn't inspire
much interest on my part.

Unless someone's seen an announcement that I missed, the pd ksh in question
is an incomplete alpha-test version. I suggest picking it up only if you want
to do work on it to make it more complete.

I'm not sure how old that version is. We've got a version
here that we made work on Ultrix, and have added vi mode. IT's still
in alpha test, so don't expect too much, although it's starting to get
stable. Several of us here use it for a login shell. Maybe the main
author, Eric Gisin, should start releasing notes about it, but I doubt
that he wants it in general circulation at this stage. The vi mode
was written here, and we haven't sent our latest bug fixes, so it's
not all that great.

The current version of ksh should work on Ultrix 2.x.
Ultrix had a bug in dup that caused the FD_CLOEXEC file descriptor flag
bit to be incorrectly copied from the old to the new file descriptor.
