[comp.sources.d] Changes at archive site "sir-alan"

mikes@sir-alan.UUCP (Mike Squires) (12/19/89)

The system is now a Tandy 4000LX with a total of 1GB filestore. There
are two dial-up lines: 814 337 0348 (currently 1200/2400) and 814 337
3159 (Telebit TB+ cycling 2400/19.2/9600/1200 - BREAK for speed change).
The 1200/2400 modem will be replaced by a USR Dual Standard (HST + V.32)
cycling 2400-9600-1200 when I receive the new ROMs. Anonymous uucp
logins are either "pdsrc" or "uucp" (functionally identical) or via
an XBBS BBS system ("bbs" or "xbbs").

I will be running SCO TCP/IP shortly and will be able to offer SL/IP
links to the archives. This is probably less efficient than a 19.2K
Telebit uucp connection, however.

The archives are all on the secondary drive, /u. There are three such
directories of interest: /u/pdsrc (formerly /usr/spool/pdsrc); /u/pubdir
(formerly /usr/spool/uucppublic); and /u/uunet (new). The /usr/spool/
uucppublic directory is readable, but is no longer used for archive
storage.

Each directory contains a file called "HELP" which provides basic
information, plus "ls-lR" and "ls-lR.Z" files generated daily. The
old index files are no longer used, as their size is now too large
for manual updates.

Most of the files can also be downloaded via an XBBS BBS system (login
of "bbs" or "xbbs". In addition there is a mail-based server that can
either uuencode or uncompress a file for transmission by mail. This
service is really intended for users of UUPC (uucp for PC's) that
cannot handle binary files. To use the mail-based server, first send
mail to sir-alan!mikes and get your system added to my Systems file;
next, send mail to "sir-alan!snarf" with a subject of "snarf" and a
message body of "snarf help" (beginning in column 1). This will return
the help file. "snarf" can uuencode or uncompress a file for transmission,
list directories, and search for strings in an index file containing all
subject headers and return matches with the location of those files.

The current organization is as follows. The files from UUNET are
as of October 1989; the files in /u/pdsrc are still incomplete.

  Directory Description Index File

  /u/pdsrc comp.sources.[bugs,misc,sun,unix,x] /u/pdsrc/ls-lR.Z or
                alt.sources /u/pdsrc/ls-lR
                some net.sources

  /u/pubdir Miscellaneous material for MS-DOS, /u/pubdir/ls-lR.Z or
                UNIX, XENIX, Mac, etc. /u/pubdir/ls-lR

/u/uunet Files from UUNET (including comp. /u/uunet/ls-lR.Z or
                sources.[misc,unix,x], publicly /u/uunet/ls-lR
                distributiable BSD sources, X11R3
                sources, GNU sources, RFC's
